Shines in 2009
From international medals to national champions
Indysabre fencers continued to climb their way to the top at the local,
regional, national and international levels in 2009:
January: Emerson Woerner jumps on junior points
in NAC D. Youth fencers dominate the Chicago Lakeshore RYC led by top eight
finishes by Cat Bouwkamp, Blake Miller, Alex Rohe and Brody Elmore.
February: Sam Hine finishes 13th in the Cadet
Men's Sabre event at the 2009 Junior Olympics in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Alex
Rohe ties for third place in the Purdue Spring Open.
March: Coach Kizik fences earns the silver medal
in the Combined Vet Men's Sabre event at NAC E in Atlanta, Georgia. Cat
Bouwkamp and Alec Surridge turn in top eight finishes at the Arnold Fencing
Classic in Columbus, Ohio. Cydney Williams places sixth in the Houston SRYC.
April: Indysabre sweeps the medal stand at the
Great Lakes Sectional Championships in both the Open Men's and Junior Men's
events.
May: Beijing Olympian Gamal El Din Amin takes
out Emerson Woerner in the Indianapolis Fencing Club Spring Open.
June: Training camp with Konstantine Gritsaev
and an amazing after-party at the Elmores.
July: Sam Hine earns the bronze medal in
Division II men's sabre. Linda Dunn secured her spot as an alternate to the
Vet 50 Women's Sabre national team with her 6th place finish. Indysabre's Junior Men's Team finished 14th.
August/September: Training, training, training!
October: Cat Bouwkamp
brought home Indysabre's first international medal by winning the bronze in
chair women's sabre from Szabla Kilińsiego, the IWAS Wheelchair
Fencing World Cup.
November: Laslo Gal earned his E09 at the
Indiana Division Turkey Shoot in Fort Wayne.
December: All three Indysabre competitors at NAC
C in Pittsburgh bring home medals (TWO GOLD!). Coach WINS the Veteran Combined
Men's Sabre event, earning his A09 and vaulting him to NUMBER ONE in the
country on the Vet 40 Rolling National Points list.

Session Duration: One month
Description: This beginning fencing class covers basic
footwork, bladework, game strategy, tactics and protocol, as well as history
of the sport, safety issues and athletic conditioning. Equipment provided.
